Built in 1872, the "Railroad House" accommodated passengers traveling to other railroads and four stagecoach lines. After the International and Great Northern Railroad reached Austin in 1876, traffic at the depot and along the Avenue was very busy. The bar of Carmelo's, as well as all of the private rooms above, occupies the area of the original building, recorded on the National Register as a Texas Landmark.
